This birthday party begins smashingly

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington Symphony Orchestra proved tonight that people will come to downtown entertainment in the city of Washington, Pa., when quality takes the stage.

That group of talented musicians conducted by Yugo Ikach drew an overflow crowd to a free concert that kicked off the small Pennsylvania city's bicentennial celebration. The turnout was a surprise to many local residents, who have been accustomed to festivals that typically bomb here.

It's a great beginning to four days of events in what apparently got off to a sluggish start in the planning stages, but is headed to become a smashing success thanks to generous donations from big local industries, which include Consol Energy, The Meadows Racetrack & Casino and Range Resources Corp.

The View or The Boy Scouts? -- I'm not a scout, but I'd not want to rain on that 100th anniversary parade and Jamboree

MEDIA RESEARCH CENTER

This year is the 100th anniversary of The Boy Scouts of America, a group that exemplifies many of the best aspects of our nation.

President Obama was scheduled to address the Boy Scouts Jamboree, an event held once every four years, today at 11:00 AM, as our last three Presidents have done.

Unfortunately, Barack Obama decided he’d rather speak with some of his friends in the liberal media. He’ll be recording an episode of The View in Manhattan this afternoon then attending two high-dollar fundraisers for the Democratic National Committee this evening.

The Media Research Center’s own Penny Starr has been on top of this story from the beginning! As usual, NewsBusters and CNSNews.com bring us a story that we wouldn’t see anywhere in the liberal media.

Left to their own, the liberal media will focus on the human interest angle of the President going on The View; they’ll conveniently leave out the slighting of the Boy Scouts to campaign among the liberal elites in New York and the media.

Mark, let CBS and NBC know that we expect them to cover this slight like they would if it were a Republican President.

Tomorrow’s evening news programs will feature stories about the President going on The View. If the MRC Action team makes their voices heard, NBC and CBS will have to tell the whole truth about President Obama’s appearance on daytime television!

About half of our schools were visited today by the good people of ComDoc who installed new (and networked!) copy machines in the main offices and a few other places at the High School.

These new copy machines will not only copy but will allow our staff to scan and email pdf's as well as use the machines as high-capacity network printers they can print to from their computers. Fun lies ahead!

John Callahan (1951-2010)

Syndicated from 2 Political Junkies on July 28, 2010 - 7:23pm :: All Blog Headlines

From the NYTimes:

John Callahan, a quadriplegic, alcoholic cartoonist whose work in newspapers and magazines made irreverent, impolitic sport of people with disabilities and diseases and those who would pity and condescend to them, died Saturday in Portland, Ore. He was 59 and lived in Portland.

The causes were complications of quadriplegia and respiratory problems, his brother Tom said.

Like his friend Gary Larson, the creator of “The Far Side,” Mr. Callahan made drawings with a gleeful appreciation of the macabre he found in everyday life. He was, however, a man who lived his life with disadvantages, some of them self-wrought, and he viewed the world through a dark and wicked lens.

“This is John, I’m a little too depressed to take your call today,” the message on his answering machine said. “Please leave your message at the gunshot.”

In his honor:
