If you've submitted a site for inclusion in Pittsburgh Bloggers in the last year, or if you were thinking of adding one, let me explain what's going on.

Unfortunately, the website is not working correctly. When we add new websites to the directory and feed aggregator, the site adds them incorrectly -- the links that should point to the originating site point instead back to www.pghbloggers.org. In thinking about how to fix this, we come up against a second problem, which is that the feed aggregator is choking on the 900+ feeds it's trying to read and combine. It's actually aggregating fewer than the sites it wants to, at irregular intervals, and generally it's not doing what it's intended to do.

A few weeks back we tried adding new sites anyway, just to see whether it was a human error rather than code error that led to the incorrect listings. While it looks like they’re added, they aren’t added correctly. So the site is still stuck.

What I’ve decided to do is to drop the part of the site that’s broken (the feed aggregator) and have the site be a directory only. This was the initial vision for Pittsburgh Bloggers -- to be a directory of blogs in the Pittsburgh region -- and I hope that it will have value.

We’re in the process of setting the new site up. I expect it will be live in mid August.

In the meantime, if you have already submitted a form for a blog you want to add, we probably still have the form you sent and will be adding it to the new site. But if you want to resubmit it to be sure, go ahead.

Thanks for wanting to be in Pgh Bloggers! I’m glad to see it’s still seen as useful despite being broken. I hope the new site will be useful as well (and much less broken).

Have comments on this plan, or on Pittsburgh Bloggers? Let us know what you think.
